How Crop Value Is Calculated in Grow a Garden

Crop value in Grow a Garden is not random. It follows a clear formula that multiplies base value, weight, mutations, and a few smaller factors together. Once you understand each part, you can price any crop and never be fooled in a trade. This guide breaks the formula down step by step. To skip the math, enter your crop in the Grow a Garden calculator and read the total.

The full value formula

Every crop's value uses the same community model. It looks complex, but each piece is simple on its own.

Value = Base value x (Weight / Base weight) squared x Growth x (1 + sum of environmental bonuses) x (1 + friend percent) x Amount

Why the formula matters

Knowing the formula means you can predict value, not just look it up. It shows why weight beats rarity, why mutations multiply so fast, and where a trade offer is hiding value. This is the backbone of the crop value calculator.

The parts in plain terms

Base value is the starting price. Weight scales it up sharply. Growth and environmental mutations multiply it further. Friend bonus and amount are the final touches. We will walk through each one.

Base value and the weight multiplier

The first two parts do most of the work. Base value sets the floor, and weight can lift it dramatically.

Base value

Base value is the community-estimated price of a crop at its base weight with no mutations. A Watermelon sits near 2,700 and a Mushroom near 136,000. See the full set in our Grow a Garden value list.

Weight squared

The weight term is the ratio of your crop's weight to its base weight, squared. Because it is squared, doubling the weight roughly quadruples this multiplier. A crop at three times its base weight gets about nine times the value from weight alone. This is why weight is the biggest single driver of price.

The mutation multipliers

Mutations are the next two parts of the formula, and they are where value can explode.

Growth multiplier

Growth mutations are exclusive, so only one applies: Normal at 1x, Silver at 5x, Gold at 20x, or Rainbow at 50x. This value multiplies the weight adjusted price once.

Environmental bonus sum

Environmental mutations stack. Each adds its multiplier minus one to a shared sum, and the total environmental multiplier is one plus that sum. A crop that is Wet and Frozen gives one plus one plus nine, which is eleven times. Our mutations guide lists every value.

Friend bonus and amount

The last two parts are smaller but still matter, especially when selling in bulk.

Friend bonus

A friend bonus adds a percentage on top, written as one plus the friend percent. A ten percent bonus multiplies the total by 1.1. It applies after the mutation multipliers.

Amount

Amount simply multiplies by how many identical crops you are selling or trading. Ten identical crops are worth ten times one, all else equal.

A worked example

Let us price a single Gold Watermelon that is also Wet and Frozen, grown to double its base weight, with no friend bonus.

StepFactorValue
Base valueWatermelon2,700
WeightDouble base weight, squaredx4
GrowthGoldx20
EnvironmentalWet plus Frozen (1 + 1 + 9)x11
FriendNonex1
AmountOne cropx1

Multiply it out: 2,700 times 4 times 20 times 11 equals about 2,376,000. One well grown, mutated Watermelon is worth over two million, which shows how fast the multipliers compound.

Check your own crop

You do not need to do this by hand. Enter your crop, weight, and mutations in the calculator, and it applies every step and shows the breakdown. This is the safest way to price a crop before a big trade, as covered in our trading guide.

Frequently asked questions

How is crop value calculated in Grow a Garden?+
Crop value is base value times the weight ratio squared, times the growth multiplier, times one plus the summed environmental bonuses, times one plus the friend percent, times amount. In plain terms, weight and mutations multiply a crop's base price. The calculator applies this full formula and shows each step for any crop you enter.
Why does weight increase value so much?+
Weight increases value sharply because the weight term is squared in the formula. Doubling a crop's weight roughly quadruples the weight multiplier, and tripling it gives about nine times. This makes weight the single biggest driver of crop value, often outweighing rarity, so growing crops heavy is the most reliable way to raise their price.
Do all mutations multiply value the same way?+
No, growth and environmental mutations work differently. Growth mutations are exclusive, so only one applies and it multiplies once. Environmental mutations stack, each adding its bonus to a shared sum that becomes one multiplier. This is why you can only have one of Gold or Rainbow, but many environmental mutations at the same time.
What is the friend bonus in the value formula?+
The friend bonus is a percentage added on top of a crop's value, written as one plus the friend percent. A ten percent bonus multiplies the total by 1.1. It applies after the weight and mutation multipliers, so it scales the whole value. In the calculator, you can set the friend percent to include it.
How do I calculate value for multiple crops?+
Calculate the value of one crop, then multiply by the amount if the crops are identical. The amount term in the formula does exactly this. If the crops differ in weight or mutations, price each one separately and add the totals, since each crop's value depends on its own weight and mutations.
Is the value formula official?+
No, the formula and the numbers in it are a community model, not official values. It closely matches observed in game pricing and is reliable for comparing crops and planning trades. Because the game can change, treat results as strong estimates and confirm important values in the calculator before selling or trading.
Can I price a crop without doing the math?+
Yes, the crop value calculator does all the math for you. Pick your crop, enter its weight, and toggle any growth and environmental mutations, and it returns the exact total with each multiplier shown. This is faster and less error prone than working the formula by hand, especially for heavily mutated crops.
Why is my crop worth more than the base value?+
Your crop is heavier than base weight or carries mutations, both of which multiply the base value. Base value is only the price at minimum weight with no mutations. Once you add weight squared and any growth or environmental mutations, the real value climbs well above the base, often by many times.
